Isolation of melanocyte-stimulating hormone from hog pituitary gland.

چکیده
The present communication is concerned with two substances possessing melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) activity, ar-MSH and /3-MSH, found in hog pituitary gland. The main component, o(-MSH, was isolated by a four-step process consisting of solvent extraction and fractional precipitation, oxycellulose adsorption, counter-current distribution, and paper electrophoresis. a-MSH has been found to be homogeneous with respect to counter-current distribution and to paper electrophoresis at different pH values. A preliminary report on the isolation of CK-MSH appeared elsewhere (1). These hormones, which are produced in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland (a), previously were called the melanophore hormone, melanophore-expanding hormone, or intermedin. It has been known for several years that the skin of aquatic animals could be darkened by injections of these hormones (3). Recently, a similar effect was observed in human beings (4).

Adrenocorticotrophic and melanocyte-stimulating peptides in the human pituitary.
The adrenocorticotrophic and melanocyte-stimulating peptides of the human pituitary were investigated by means of radioimmunoassay, bioassay and physicochemical procedures. Substantial amounts of adrenocorticotrophin and a peptide resembling beta-lipotrophin were identified in pituitary extracts, but alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and corticotrophin-li...

As the primary regulator of the endocrine system, the pituitary gland is the most important of the endocrine glands. The major glands of the endocrine system include the pituitary, thyroid, and parathyroid glands, and the pancreas, adrenal cortex, ovaries, and testes. The pituitary regulates the actions of most of these glands and many other body functions. It, in turn, is regulated by the hypo...
متن کاملHormone of Middle Lobe of Pituitary Melanocyte Stimulating Hormones
The hormones secreted by intermediate lobe or middle lobe of pituitary gland are called melanocyte stimulating hormones or MSH. POMC is the precursor molecule which is cleaved by proteases to give ACTH and β-lipotropin. The ACHT is further cleaved to β-MSH which has 13 amino acids. There is also α-MSH which is present in larger quantities. Amino acids 11-17 of β-MSH are common to both α-MSH and...
متن کاملEffects of testosterone and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone on preputial-gland (sebaceous) activity.
The preputial glands in the rat are large modified sebaceous glands, which are believed to be the source of a sex pheromone (Gawienowski et al., 1975). Their main secretory product is neutral lipid, which contains an unusually high proportion of squalene as well as wax esters and glyceryl ether lipids (Nicolaides, 1965; Helmy & Hack, 1967). Like cutaneous sebaceous glands their secretion is hol...
متن کاملRelease of alpha-MSH from the in vitro superfused neuro-intermediate lobe of the pituitary of the rat by antidiuretic hormone.
The effect of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) on the release of immunoreactive alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) from the superfused neurointermediate lobe of the pituitary of the normal Wistar and Brattleboro (diabetes insipidus) rat was studied in vitro. In control experiments, there was usually an initial peak, after which alpha-MSH release fell exponentially over the course of the...
